The basics, in plain words

What is IPTV? Live TV over the internet, explained

What is IPTV? It stands for Internet Protocol Television: live TV channels delivered over your internet connection instead of a cable line or a satellite dish. A subscription gives you a login. A player app on your TV, stick or phone uses that login to show the channels. Most services add movies and series on demand, catch-up and a TV guide on top. This page explains each piece, what you need at home, and how IPTV compares with cable and streaming apps.

How it works

How does IPTV work?

Think about how a TV signal reaches your living room. With cable, channels travel down a dedicated cable line into a receiver. With satellite, they come from a dish on the roof. With IPTV, the same kind of live channel is sent as data over the internet, the way a video call or an online video reaches you.

Your device asks for a channel, the service sends that channel as a stream, and the player app turns the stream into picture and sound. Switch channels and the app asks for a different stream. Open the guide and the app shows the schedule data that comes with the service. Nothing is recorded on your device; it plays as it arrives.

Because it travels over the internet, IPTV works with any home connection that is fast enough and steady enough, whoever your provider is. It also means your TV is only as stable as that connection, which is why speed comes up so often in setup questions.

So when people ask what is IPTV in practice, the short answer is: TV channels in an app, sent over your own internet, on a screen you already own.

What you get

What does an IPTV subscription include?

Live channels are the core. A good service adds three things that make it feel like a full TV setup. Here is what our subscription includes on every plan.

30,000+

Live channels

Canadian networks, local CTV and Global feeds, TSN, Sportsnet, RDS, TVA Sports, US networks, UK channels and groups for 60+ countries.

VOD

On demand

A library of movies and series you can start whenever you like, separate from the live channels.

7 days

Catch-up

On supported channels, play something that aired in the past week from the start.

EPG

TV guide

A grid showing what is on now and next on each channel, so you browse it the way you would on cable.

Streams come in 4K, FHD and HD, with 4K where the source broadcasts it. UFC and boxing PPV events are included, and sports channels run on dedicated priority servers.

Two pieces

How the subscription and the player app fit together

This is the part that confuses most first-time users, because cable never separated the two. With IPTV, the subscription and the app are different things, often from different companies.

The subscription is the service: the channels, the on-demand library, the guide data and the login that unlocks them. That is what you buy from us.

The player app is the software on your screen that signs in with that login and plays the streams. It works a bit like a web browser: the browser doesn’t own the websites, it just shows them. TiviMate, IBO Player, SET IPTV and Smart IPTV are examples of player apps.

  1. Get a loginRequest the free 24-hour trial or buy a plan. The login arrives on WhatsApp.
  2. Install a player appWe tell you which app fits your device and send setup steps for your exact model.
  3. Enter the loginType the details into the app once. It remembers them.
  4. Let the channels and guide loadThe first load takes a moment. After that, it opens like any TV app.

Some player apps charge their own fee, paid to the app developer. Smart IPTV, used on Samsung and LG smart TVs, costs a one-time €5.49 per TV. IBO Player and SET IPTV offer a 7-day trial and then ask for activation per device. Those fees go to the developer, not to us. Device-by-device steps are on the setup page.

At home

What do you need to watch IPTV?

  • An internet connection. About 10 Mbps for each HD stream and 25 Mbps for each 4K stream. A wired Ethernet connection is more stable than Wi-Fi. The full table is on our internet speed page.
  • A supported device. Amazon Fire TV Stick or Fire TV Cube, Android TV and Google TV boxes such as Chromecast with Google TV and NVIDIA Shield, Samsung (Tizen, 2015 and later) and LG (webOS) smart TVs, Apple TV, iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets, Windows and Mac computers, MAG and Formuler boxes.
  • A player app. One that suits that device. We name it for you.
  • A login. From the free trial or a paid plan.

That’s the whole list. There is no dish, no receiver to rent and no technician visit.

Side by side

IPTV vs streaming apps vs cable

People often lump IPTV in with streaming apps. They overlap, but they do different jobs.

IPTV subscriptionStreaming appsCable or satellite
Main contentLive channels, plus on-demandMostly on-demand shows and movies from one companyLive channels
Live sports channelsTSN, Sportsnet, RDS, TVA Sports in the guideOnly what that app streamsUsually optional extras on top of basic

Streaming-only content stays inside its own app. Prime Video’s Wednesday NHL games, Crave originals and TOU.TV Extra exclusives are examples: there is no TV channel behind them, so no TV guide carries them. For a closer look at the cable side, see IPTV vs cable.

Glossary

IPTV terms in plain words

Player app

The app on your device that signs in and plays the channels. It does not include any channels by itself; it needs a subscription login.

Xtream login

A login made of three parts: a server address, a username and a password. Many player apps ask for exactly these three fields.

M3U

A playlist format: a link or file listing channels and where to find each stream. Some apps take an M3U link instead of an Xtream login.

EPG

Electronic program guide. The TV guide grid with what is on now and next. If it shows the wrong hours, the time zone setting is usually the cause.

Catch-up

Playing a program that already aired, from the guide. Ours keeps 7 days on supported channels.

VOD

Video on demand. The movie and series library you start whenever you want, outside the live schedule.

Devices or connections

How many screens can stream at the same moment on one plan. Our plans come in 1, 2, 3 and 4 devices.

Buffering

When the picture pauses to load more of the stream. Usually a home Wi-Fi or speed issue.

Sideloading

Installing an app from outside the device’s app store, for example with the Downloader app on Fire TV.

Honest limits

What IPTV won’t do

  • Work without internet. When your connection drops, the stream stops.
  • Show streaming-only content. If something airs only inside an app, it has no channel in the guide.
  • Change the commentary language. Audio follows the broadcaster. RDS and TVA Sports are French only.
  • Keep catch-up forever. The archive covers 7 days on supported channels.
  • Stretch one login past the plan. One login per plan, and streaming on more devices than the plan allows can get it suspended.

If what is IPTV still feels abstract, the quickest way to understand it is to try it on your own TV. The free 24-hour trial gives you the full service with no card, and you can read more about Diablos IPTV on our home page.

FAQ

Questions first-time viewers ask

What does IPTV stand for?

Internet Protocol Television. It means TV channels delivered as data over an internet connection instead of a cable line or a satellite dish.

Is IPTV the same as a streaming app?

They both use the internet, but IPTV is built around live channels with a TV guide, while streaming apps mostly offer their own on-demand catalogue. Our subscription includes both live channels and an on-demand library.

Do I need a special box for IPTV?

No. A smart TV, a Fire TV Stick, an Android TV or Google TV box, Apple TV, a phone or a computer works. MAG and Formuler boxes work too if you already have one.

Why do I need a separate player app?

The subscription provides the channels and the login. The player app is the software that plays them on your device. We tell you which app fits your device and send the steps.

How fast does my internet need to be?

About 10 Mbps for each HD stream and 25 Mbps for each 4K stream. Two TVs in 4K at the same time need about 50 Mbps between them.

Can I try IPTV before paying?

Yes. Ask on WhatsApp for a free 24-hour trial with every channel and feature. No card or payment is needed.

Can I watch French channels?

Yes. ICI Radio-Canada Télé, TVA, Noovo, Télé-Québec, LCN, RDI, RDS and TVA Sports are included on every plan, with their original French audio.
