IPTV vs cable: an honest side-by-side for Canada

IPTV vs cable in Canada comes down to four questions: what you pay each month, whether TSN and Sportsnet cost extra, whether you sign a contract, and what happens on a night when your internet is slow. Diablos IPTV gives you 30,000+ live channels, every Canadian sports network and no contract, from $6.50 a month on a yearly plan. Cable keeps one real advantage: it doesn’t depend on your internet connection. The table below covers everything else.

  • No contract
  • TSN and Sportsnet included
  • Prices in CAD, tax included
  • No rented box

How do IPTV and cable compare in Canada?

Cable bills differ from one provider and region to the next, so the cable column describes how cable is usually sold in general terms. The IPTV column is our own service, with our real prices.

Price structure

Why a cable bill grows and an IPTV plan doesn’t

The CRTC requires every licensed TV provider in Canada to offer an entry-level basic package at no more than $25 a month, not including equipment. That cap is the floor of a cable bill. The channels many households actually want sit above it: TSN and Sportsnet are not mandatory basic channels, so on cable they are optional extras. Movie channels, French sports and international channels work the same way. Each one is a separate decision, and each one moves the total.

An IPTV plan is priced the other way around. Every plan carries the same channels and features, and the only thing that changes the price is how many screens stream at once and how long the plan runs. Here are the one and two screen prices, in Canadian dollars with tax included:

Plan length1 screen2 screens
1 month$18$28
3 months$28$48
6 months$48$88
12 months$78 ($6.50 a month)$128 ($10.67 a month)

There is no setup fee and nothing renews on its own. The 3 and 4 screen plans, and the cost of each extra screen, are broken down on our IPTV cost page. One cost cable doesn’t have: on some smart TVs the player app charges its own small fee, paid to the app developer.

Sports

Is IPTV better than cable for sports?

Sports is where the gap between the two is widest, because Canadian rights are split across four networks. In English, games go to Sportsnet (Rogers) and TSN (Bell). In French, they go to RDS (Bell) and TVA Sports (Quebecor). On cable, getting all four usually means adding several packs.

Hockey in English

National and regional NHL games are split between Sportsnet and TSN. With Diablos IPTV, all four Sportsnet regional feeds and TSN 1 to 5 are in the guide on every plan, so you find the regional feed you need by name.

Hockey in French

For 2026-27, TVA Sports holds the national French package and RDS keeps 45 Canadiens regular-season games. Both are included, with their original French commentary.

Raptors, Blue Jays and the CFL

The Raptors are on TSN and Sportsnet, the Blue Jays on Sportsnet, and the CFL on TSN in English and RDS or RDS 2 in French.

PPV without the extra charge

UFC and boxing PPV events are included on every plan. On cable, a PPV event is normally bought one at a time.

Sports channels run on dedicated priority servers. League by league details are on the sports page.

Honest limits

What cable still does better

We sell IPTV, so take this section as the part of the IPTV vs cable question we would want answered before switching ourselves.

  • It doesn’t need your internet. Traditional cable and satellite keep working when your internet is down or slow. IPTV needs a steady connection, about 10 Mbps for each HD screen and 25 Mbps for each 4K screen.
  • Evenings don’t affect it. If your household is streaming, gaming and downloading at 8 pm, an IPTV stream shares that connection. Cable has its own line.
  • One bill. Many people get TV, internet and phone from one company on one invoice. IPTV is a separate purchase.
  • Nothing to install. With cable, the provider sets up the receiver. With IPTV you install a player app, although we send steps for your exact device and stay on the chat until it works.

A few things neither one gives you. Prime Video’s Wednesday NHL package is streaming-only for Prime members, so it is not on any TV channel, cable or IPTV. The same goes for Crave originals and TOU.TV Extra exclusives. And on both, the commentary language follows the broadcaster: RDS and TVA Sports are French only.

The decision

Who should switch from cable, and who should stay

IPTV is likely a better fit if

  • You pay extra for TSN, Sportsnet, RDS or TVA Sports today
  • You want channels from another country without a separate pack
  • Your home internet is steady in the evening
  • You’d rather pay for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months with no contract
  • You already own a smart TV, a streaming stick or an Android box

Cable may still suit you if

  • Your internet is slow or drops often
  • You watch only the basic channels and nothing more
  • Your TV is part of a bundle you don’t want to break up
  • Someone at home wants a receiver and a remote they already know, with no app at all

Switching

How to switch without missing a game

  1. Check your speed firstRun a speed test on the TV or device you plan to use, in the evening. Make sure it clears 10 Mbps per HD screen or 25 Mbps per 4K screen.
  2. Take the trial on a real nightAsk for the free 24-hour trial on WhatsApp and use it on a game night, with the channels you watch most. No card is needed.
  3. Set up favouritesPut your local CTV, CBC and Global feeds and your team’s sports channels in favourites, so the TV feels familiar from day one.
  4. Pick a plan lengthStart with 1 month if you want to be sure, or take a longer plan for a lower monthly price. Every paid plan is refundable in full within 30 days of payment.
  5. Then deal with cableCheck your cable agreement for term or cancellation conditions before you call. Those depend on your provider, so read them first.

Start with the free trial, or browse the full channel list to compare it with your current line-up. More about the service is on the Diablos IPTV home page.

FAQ

IPTV vs cable questions

Is IPTV cheaper than cable in Canada?

For many homes, yes. Our plans run from $6.50 a month on a yearly plan to $18 for a single month on one screen, with sports and PPV included. Cable’s basic package is capped by the CRTC at $25 a month before equipment, and sports channels like TSN and Sportsnet are optional extras on top, so actual cable bills vary.

Do I lose my local channels if I leave cable?

No. CBC regional feeds, CTV local feeds across the country, Global, Citytv, CHCH, OMNI 1 and 2, TVA, Noovo and ICI Radio-Canada Télé are all in the guide.

Does IPTV work when the internet is down?

No. IPTV streams over your internet connection, so it stops when the connection stops. This is the main thing cable does better.

Do I need a box like a cable receiver?

No rental box is needed. IPTV runs on a smart TV, a Fire TV Stick, an Android TV or Google TV box, Apple TV, a phone, a computer, or a MAG or Formuler box.

Can I keep watching on several TVs like with cable?

Yes. Choose a plan for 2, 3 or 4 devices. The number is how many screens can stream at the same moment.

Is there a contract?

No. Plans last 1, 3, 6 or 12 months and never renew on their own. When a plan ends, you decide whether to buy another.
